AUTOMATIC DISQUALIFIERS FOR CIVILIAN EMPLOYMENT
- Any felony conviction (at any age).
- Any illegal use of any controlled substance (illegal drug) listed in Schedule I or Schedule II of Title 54.1 of the Code of Virginia in the past five years or the illegal use of any controlled substance listed in Schedule I or Schedule II more than twice in the past 10 years. The use of any hallucinogenic substance such as LSD, PCP, or Psilocybin at any time in the past 10 years.
- Illegal sale of any drug or narcotic at any time in your life.
- A conviction of driving under the influence in the past five years, or more than one conviction of driving under the influence in the applicant’s lifetime, if the position requires the operation of Virginia State Police vehicles.
- Active revocation or suspension of driving privileges in any state, if the position requires the operation of Virginia State Police vehicles.
- Any conviction that required registration on any Sex Offender Registry.
- Falsification of application with intent to conceal or mislead.
- Documented untruthfulness during applicant process.
Dress Code, Tattoo, and Body Modification Policy
All Civilian Employees must abide by the following policies:
Hair
Hair should always be kept clean and neat. Hair shall be of a natural shade and have no unnatural tones or colors. Spray-on substances producing an unnatural color or glitter are prohibited. Attention should also be paid to all aspects of personal grooming.
Tattoos
Tattoos on the head, face, nose, eyebrows, neck, or tongue shall be covered at all times while on duty, including during training, by utilizing commercially available cosmetics or fabric covers made for the purpose of covering tattoos. If commercial products are used, they must be of the same skin-tone color as the employee and be neutral in appearance. This policy applies whenever an employee is representing the Department in an official capacity regardless of whether on duty or not.
Employees who routinely interact directly with the public as part of their normal job duties shall cover tattoos on all other parts of the body while on duty by utilizing clothing, cosmetics, or fabric covers made for the purpose of covering tattoos. If cosmetics or fabric covers are used, they must be of the same skin-tone color as the employee and be neutral in appearance. This policy applies whenever an employee is representing the Department in any official capacity regardless of whether on duty or not.
Body Modifications
Body modifications visible while on duty are prohibited. Body modifications include, but are not limited to:
- tongue splitting or bifurcation;
- complete or trans-dermal implantation of any objects other than hair replacement;
- abnormal shaping of the ears, eyes, or nose;
- gauging or gradually increasing the radius of a surgically induced opening in the flesh in areas such as the ear lobes or lips;
- abnormal filing of the teeth; and
- branding or scarification.
Body modifications shall not include those procedures medically necessitated by illness, deformity or injury, when performed by a licensed medical professional.
Jewelry
- Jewelry, if worn by civilian employees, must present a professional appearance.
- Employees who routinely interact with the public as a part of their normal job duties may wear no more than two earrings in each earlobe and are prohibited from attaching, affixing, or displaying objects, articles, jewelry, or ornamentation to or through the nose, tongue, or any exposed body part (including when visible through clothing) while on duty.
Marijuana Policy
All Department employees are prohibited from possessing, buying, selling, using, or growing marijuana unless it is part of the employee’s official law enforcement duties.
